Amazing Vegan Pizza In Abu Dhabi (and vegan cheesecake too!)
Aloha – happy Tuesday from Abu Dhabi.
If you follow/read my blog you will understand and be aware of my pizza obsession. I posted a skinny quinoa pizza recipe a while ago to try to justify eating it as much as I want to – I also ordered a vegan pizza from Pizza Hut too, which was cheeseless but still fab.
So you will understand how happy I was to be asked to taste and review some vegan options from Freedom Pizza UAE. Long story short – it is delicious.
I was delivered two small pizzas – ‘Spring Green’ on a skinny base and the ‘Mother Earth’ pizza came on a regular base. The Spring Green pizza was topped with cilantro, spring onion, parsley and pimento chili (a must try). Mother Earth was loaded with artichoke, mixed bell peppers, cilantro, garlic, mushrooms and onions – veggie pizza heaven.
The vegan cheese which was used on my pizza was soya based, however they did inform me too that they are hoping to have a coconut based vegan cheese option soon. All the toppings and ingredients are organic too, as if you needed another reason to want to try vegan pizza. The majority of the ingredients they used are sourced directly from local business which I also like.
Both pizzas tasted so good! Packed with flavor the small-sized pizzas give you 6 slices. These pizzas are a great healthy option, not just for vegans. Freedom Pizza also provide gluten-free options.
I was also given a side of salad, the Freedom Pizza ‘Superfoods Organic Salad’. I was really impressed with the size of the salad and how fresh the ingredients were. The salad is made up of baby spinach, basil, rocket, kale, purslane, spring onion, purple bell pepper, purple cabbage, cherry tomato, cranberries, toasted almonds and pumpkin sees. Not your standard side salad from a pizza take out chain!
Freedom Pizza also sell a number of delicious sweet options, which give you with a healthy alternative to a dessert (if you go for pizza you might as well get a dessert right?’. They were kind enough to let me try a Mango and Passionfruit Vegan Cheesecake by Coco Yoco which I absolutely loved. I definitely need to try to make a vegan cheese cake of my own soon!
The pizza’s arrived quickly, still hot on arrival and in one piece (quite rare out here in my experience). The prices are reasonable too, not above the average price you would pay for a take away pizza. At the moment, Freedom deliver all over Dubai and so far have one branch in Abu Dhabi delivering to a number of locations. If your location isn’t on the list, you can pick up your pizzas too from central Khalidiyah area. The business have plans to open more stores in AD too, so watch this space as more locations are added to the delivery list. You can order online or over the phone, all the details you need are here on the website.
I am very excited about Freedom Pizza and the vegan options they have available in the UAE. With fresh, organic produce, these pizzas have something for everyone with quick and friendly service. Why not try a healthier option the next time you are craving take away pizza – I promise you they are the best you will try here. Jess x
How To Make The Best Smoothie
If you follow my blog or know me you will know that I am obsessed with smoothies. By obsessed I mean I have at least one a day.
I usually start my day with a super smoothie and cram as many super ingredients in to it as possible. A very random but nutritious mix, today my breakfast smoothie contained of almond milk, banana, kale, chai seeds, raw cacao nibs, turmeric, blueberries, strawberries, nut butter, coconut oil and avocado. It doesn’t look the nicest of concoctions but it tasted amazing and is packed full of nutrition and gave me every vitamin under the sun (or most of them).
I love my breakfast smoothies for a number of reasons, here are some smoothie benefits;
1.They are not expensive. I can buy my ingredients at the start of the week and make myself a breakfast every morning for pretty cheap.
2.I don’t like eating first thing in the morning, a smoothie is a good way to start the day.
3.They fill me up until lunch time. If you make a smoothie packed with the right stuff, you can stop yourself craving all morning before lunch.
4.Weight loss. Smoothies are great as they can help you lose weight and also help you stay your current weight.
5.Nutritional value. I can get my daily dose of vitamins and the nutrition I need to stay healthy.
6.Easiness. It literally takes less than 5 minutes to make a smoothie.
7.You can have breakfast to go. Most mornings I will drink mine on the way to work.
8.Beauty Smoothies. Using ingredients like avocado and blueberries to give you great skin, hair and nails.
9.Morning energy. Use your smoothie to get natural energy boosters into your body to kick start the way.
10.Smoothies taste GOOD.
There are so many tasty recipes for smoothies out there, but if you want to go freestyle, here is the best way to build a smoothie;
•Base; Avoid dairy and use 1 cup of almond milk and 1 cup of water as a base. Almond milk is low in fat and the flavor goes with everything. I also like hazelnut and coconut milk too, but they are higher in fat.
•Smooth Smoothie; To get the smooth part of a smoothie, I like to use 1 banana or 2/3 tbsps. of avocado. This gives you a nice creamy smoothie, peaches and mango work too.
•Berries; Get you delicious flavor and anti-oxidants in there by cramming some berries in. Frozen berries are much cheaper and work just as well, if not better as they give you a nice cool smoothie. I like to use strawberries and blueberries – half a cup of each.
•Greens; You can’t forget your greens! Use either 1 cup of kale or spinach to get your iron (and the rest)
•Texture; If you like your smoothie with a bit of texture try 2 tbsp. of chai seeds, crunchy nut butter, quinoa or cacao nibs. Oats work really well too but watch the fat/calorie content by also limiting them too ¼ cup.
•Power Powders; Get to powerful powders in there by adding tbsp. of raw cacao, turmeric, matcha or maca.

Also, please let me know if you have any recipes that you love, I am always open to new smoothie ideas! Why not make a smoothie for your breakfast tomorrow? I am enjoying mine right now 🙂 I hope you have had a good week so far, mine has consisted of a Tiki Bar and studying (it’s all about balance) – Jess x
It Literally Tastes Just As Good!!
Ok – so I just wanted to share with you the best finding ever for Vegans…. vegan pizza hut. Last night was one of those nights where you just crave pizza/take away food. I just wanted to get home, get into bed and eat pizza. That’s all.
So, I went ahead and ordered a vegan pizza from pizza hut. It was so good! I think I actually preferred it, I could taste all the veggies (there were a lot) and didn’t feel like I was eating a big slab of greasy cheese. Nor did I feel awful afterwards.
Both the regular pizza sauce and the thin and crispy base are vegan friendly. No dairy what so ever.
Even if you are not vegan, a cheese-less pizza is a great way to enjoy your favorite take away pizza, without as many calories 🙂 I preferred my Skinny Vegan Quinoa Pizza (obviously) but it was still delicious 😉
Happy Monday – Jess x
Heaven Has Answered My Prayers!
Ben & Jerry’s have announced that due to a number of demands/pleads from Vegans, they will be launching dairy free ice cream next year! Apparently they have been working on this for a while and are committed to getting the flavors just right. Good things come to those who wait!
This makes me happy for a number of reasons. Firstly, huge brands like Ben and Jerry’s are realizing how popular veganism is just now, secondly this is great news for both animals and the plant and thirdly, well it means Vegan’s can enjoy Ben & Jerry’s! The popular ice cream giant have confirmed there will be no animal products at all in this new dairy line – no honey, no dairy and no eggs = no cruelty.
Ben & Jerry’s have always been pretty big on environmental issues supporting fair trade and world peace – so it was only a matter of time before a Vegan product line was launched. The petition with over 30,000 signatures or change.org probably helped too.
There is no news on the flavors yet, but the main ingredient will be almond milk (no surprises there), but I don’t think they will disappoint.
It is so great that more and more food giants like Ben & Jerry’s are taking a step in the dairy free direction. Not only will their Vegan Ice Cream be guilt free because of the tiny fat content in almond milk – you can eat this ice cream knowing that no animals and the environment won’t be harmed. 🙂
The dairy free line will be launched in the U.S initially, hopefully it won’t be too long before it reaches the rest of the world. Anyway, if you can’t wait till then why not try my Vegan Cacao & Mint Ice Cream Recipe – it’s so good.
This news and the fact I have booked my flights home for Christmas has made this a great week – happy Thursday indeed! Jess x
What is Quinoa?
a plant of the goosefoot family found in the Andes, where it was widely cultivated for its edible starchy seeds prior to the introduction of Old World grains.
the grain-like seeds of the quinoa, used as food and in the production of alcoholic drinks.
I see it everywhere these days, in salads, on Instagram and advertised heavily in organic shops and markets. I knew it was good for you and I thought it tasted great, but up until last night, that is all I really knew! So I decided to spend some time researching and here is what I can tell you about Quinoa;
• It is one of the few plant based sources of complete protein
• It comes in 3 varieties, whole wheat white, red and black
• It is in fact a seed, not a grain
• It provides all 9 essential amino acids
• It is gluten free
• And cholesterol free
• Back in the day the Inca’s referred to it as ‘The Mother Grain’
• The plant that Quinoa comes from is called the Chenopodium (scientific name)
• It is related to beets and spinach
• It is available all year round (yay)
1 cup of cooked Quinoa (185g) contains only 223 calories and 3.6g of fat!
Music to my ears.
If you didn’t have enough reasons to want to try Quinoa, here is another one. It is very easy to make.
- 1 cup of Quinoa
- 1 1/2 cup of water
- Heat in a pan, once boiling reduce to a simmer and leave for 15 – 20 minutes
The serving options are endless. You can use it as a rice or pasta substitute or simply use it to fill out a salad without feeling guilty. I cooked it for the first time the other night and made a brilliant Vegan Superfood Quinoa salad, check out the recipe here.
I went a bit crazy and bought quite a lot of the stuff, so I will continue to post recipes as and when I make them.
In the mean time, there you have it, a quick introduction to another new favorite of mine. It’s low in fat, high in nutrients and easy to make.. what is not to like?
Have you tried Quinoa yet? Let me know!
