Book Lovers Vegan Candles in the UAE: The Good Stuff

Renewable, biodegradable & vegan candles – I CAN’T COPE.

Anyone else obsessed with candles?? Obsessed as in you buy new ones when you already have plenty, or obsessed as in you can’t walk past them in the shop with out sniffing every single different scent. Freshly mowed lawns, rose petals, cupcake.. urgh.

Here’s a new one for you – what about candles that smelled like books, fictional worlds & literary characters?? This is what my new fav candle smells like. A soy candle with a bookish smell, what more can a vegan book-worm want!?

These candles are produced by an amazing brand called Frost Beard Studio. A couple in Minnesota & (their love of books & candles) came up with this fantastic idea & the candles have proved to be very popular worldwide.

& good news for you if you are in the UAE! The Good Stuff stock these candles! All their products are displayed in Dubai at the Open Space Business Centre, Level 22 Millennium Plaza Hotel.

I have the ‘Don’t Panic’ (Fresh Towels) candle, which smells of fresh linen & green tea – 2 of the best smells EVER. Part of the Book Lovers’ Series, the candle I have has a completely original scent.

Scents: Fresh cotton, Green tea
Scent Strength:Medium/Strong
Materials: Soy wax, Cotton wick, Glass jar, Plastic lid, Dye chips, Fragrance oil
Burn time: approximately 65 hours

Why I am obsessed:

    • Soy wax is renewable, biodegradable and vegan.
    • All candles are carefully hand-poured in small batches.
    • Jars are recyclable and reusable.
    • Cotton wicks are lead-free.

Apart from the fact that the by purchasing these candles you are supporting a small business, there are so many reasons why you should stick to soy candles;

1. Soy candles usually burn longer
2. Soy wax is 100% biodegradable
3. If you drip wax everywhere, soy wax is easier to clean
4. The beautiful fragrances are released quicker with soy candles
5. Soy wax is made from natural vegetable products (as opposed to paraffin which is a refined gasoline product)
6. So when you burn a paraffin candle, you are released the same toxins into the air that are found in diesel fuel (gross)

I could sit and roast paraffin all day, there are so many articles online telling you the reasons why you should be avoiding them.

Also, for my UAE vegans, these soy candles do not contain any beeswax. I know there are a few other soy candles for sale through out the region, however these are the first ones I have found to be completely vegan (yay!)

So if you are interested in buying one of these amazing vegan, biodegradable candles just contact The Good Stuff AE for more info or pop in to visit! They stock loads of other really cool stuff – check them out on Instagram & FB.

Let me know if you try them! Happy Thursday people, have a nice weekend! x

Ecover – The Animal & Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Brand

“Both of us can’t look good at the same time, it’s either me or the house”

Who else has a thing for cleaning?

I love to clean. It’s usually my Friday morning thing – some good tunes on in the background & I get my Cinderella on. I find it quite therapeutic & people who don’t clean their own floors will never fully appreciate the part where you get to see how dirty your floor was when you empty the bucket lol. & no – not everyone in the UAE has a maid. I wouldn’t wish my mad house on anyone.

When you think of the term ‘cruelty free’ what do you guys think of? I usually think about vegan make up first, or make up which hasn’t been tested on animals. Then maybe I would also think about vegan food.

Only recently have I thought about cleaning products, I have been looking into the industry and I was pretty shocked/disappointed to find out that so many big cleaning labels still test on animals. What these animals go through it heartbreaking & I have no idea why some brands are still using this process when so many other animal friendly brands find ways to test their products easily and effectively without harming anyone ๐Ÿ™

Anyway I had a look around my local waitrose to try & see what options (if any) I had locally & I was so happy to find this brand Ecover.

I bought a few of their products – my favorites so far are the fabric softener & the bathroom cleaner – this stuff leaves my bathroom spick & span. I love the smell of the laundry products, they are gentle natural smells which are not over powering & all chemically – but still leave your clothes smelling fresh and clean.

They are bunny certified & have their long list of ingredients listed on the website here. With absolutely nothing to hide, you can see a number of natural ingredients on the list like plant sugars, coconut oil, biodegrades and minerals.

Ecover currently sell around 35 products which include laundry detergents/softeners/stain removers & dish washing products including washing up liquid & stuff for your dishwasher. In the general home care line they sell all purpose, bathroom & floor cleaners too.

All of Ecoverโ€™s products are Leaping Bunny certified. Leaping Bunny is an international certification that assures that no animal testing is done in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories or suppliers. Because we respect our furry friends. – Ecover

The bottles are 75% Plantplasticยฎ and 25% postconsumer recycled plastic – 100% renewable, reusable and recyclable.

The only thing I would say after using these products (well the bathroom cleaner at least) is that you perhaps need to use a little more elbow grease to get your place gleaming. However, I would much rather do that than fund companies which are testing on animals & have toxic chemicals kicking about. After doing some research I have discovered that there are loads more cruelty free cleaning products out there, here are some of them;

Mrs. Meyerโ€™s

It looks like it is pretty easy to get your hands on Ecover too, just visit Ecover Direct & I also found this site Ever Green which is very easy to browse & shop on too โ€“ you literally have no excuse ๐Ÿ˜‰ I truly believe that every time you spend money, you can make a difference. You can choose whether you want to fund companies who donโ€™t trade ethically or pay their taxes, or you can choose to put your money into brands who treat people, animals & the planet kindly.

Is this something you guys have thought about before? Do you know any other good cruelty free house hold cleaning brands? Things can get pretty mucky with my two crazies. Happy Wednesday! Jess xx
