Feeling Under The Weather?

Good Morning and happy Tuesday, we are half way through the week here in the UAE! I spent the whole of last week working on the new lay out for my blog, as you can probably imagine starting into a screen all day and night wasn’t great. I got so wrapped up in trying to complete everything I fell out of my routine a bit of prepping my meals and hitting the gym, and ended up feeling a bit run down and tired.

Anyway, at the weekend I peeled myself away from my laptop and visited a local fruit and veg market here in Abu Dhabi. All the products they sell are organic and de-e-elicious. I found a number of great products too which I will share with you soon, so we ended up leaving with a massive box packed with fruit and veg (and had an amazing veggie roast dinner that night).

As usual the weekend was over far too quickly, and when Sunday morning came around I had a headache and still felt a bit lethargic. I decided to use some of my fresh, organic fruits to create my easy Vitamin C smoothie to boost my immune system and perk me up a bit.

My Perfect Peachy & Cinnamon Smoothie

Because who doesn’t love peaches!? I certainly do, and this smoothie is a fantastic way to incorporate them into your diet. This is a great low fat, breakfast smoothie, very easy and quick to make first thing.

My peach & cinnamon smoothie

My peach & cinnamon smoothie

As is the smell and taste aren’t good enough reasons to fall head over heels in love with peaches, here are 3 more reasons;

Vitamin C
Peaches are a good source of Vitamin C which keeps your immune system in check, making this a great smoothie if you are feeling under the weather or a cold coming on. It is SO good for your skin too, with a number of studies revealing that people with a high Vitamin C intake generally have less wrinkles and look younger… pass me a peach! This super vitamin also reduces hormones which help reduce stress.

They keep you full
Peaches are high in fibre, so if you have this smoothie for breakfast, you should manage to avoid any mid-morning snacks until lunch too. The sweetness of the peaches definitely curbs any cravings I have.

Very important mineral
Last but certainly not least, these fluffy fruits are high in potassium, which will lower the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.

Hopefully you now want to try this smoothie, so here you go…

Ingredients
  1. 1 cup of almond milk
  2. 1/4 cup of oats
  3. 1 cup of frozen mixed berries ( I used raspberries, blueberries and red currents)
  4. 1 tablespoon of raw cacao
  5. 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  6. 2 scoops of your favorite protein powder (optional)
Foxes and Food http://foxesandfood.com/
Blend, serve and enjoy.

You will see I have used frozen berries, this is for one reason and one reason only, they are cheaper. You will be pleased to know that frozen fruit provides the same number of nutrients as fresh, so you are still getting all the health benefits.  This smoothie is packed with vitamins, as the berries I have used provide are full of anti oxidants. Once again I have used oats to keep you full, making this the perfect weight loss smoothie. You can find the benefits of coconut oil and raw cacao earlier in my blog, once you read them, you will definitely want to make this! If you are a protein junkie, protein  powder works really well in this smoothie too, giving you a great pre or post work out smoothie.

Superfood Kale & Raw Cacao Smoothie with Berries

Good morning 🙂

I have been feeling a bit under the weather this week, so this morning I decided to create a superfood smoothie which would give me an energy and vitamin boost!

This smoothie provides an amazing number of vitamins and anti-oxidants which will keep your immune system strong. Both raw cacao and kale are known for strengthening hair and nails, so you will not only feel fab, but look it too! This smoothie is also high in fibre, which will keep you fuller for longer so is a great meal replacement if you are trying to lose weight. You can find out more about raw cacao here; http://feedyourprettysoul.com/2015/07/07/what-is-raw-cacao-2/

Ingredients
  1. 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  2. 1 cup of almond milk (alternatively you can use 1/2cup almond milk, 1/2 cup water)
  3. 1/2 cup chopped kale
  4. 1 tablespoon of raw cacao
  5. 1 cup of berries of your choice (I used frozen strawberries)
Foxes and Food http://foxesandfood.com/
Blend all of the above ingredients and serve. Both kale and cacao are naturally quite bitter in taste, which is why I have suggested adding berries. If this is still not sweet enough for you, why not add organic honey or agave syrup?

Enjoy!

Vegan Superfood Quinoa Smoothie

Smoothies & Shakes | July 11, 2015 | By

Don’t waste your leftovers!

Never have time to make breakfast in the morning? Don’t have any fresh ingredients to make a smoothie? I didn’t this morning, but couldn’t leave the apartment for a two hour nail appointment with no breakfast.

After rummaging around my fridge, I found some left over Quinoa salad I had made the other day. I had heard of quinoa smoothies before, could this be the answer? I poured the superfood salad into my blender and added a cup of almond milk and half a cup of water.

My superfood, quinoa, vegan smoothie!

My superfood, quinoa, vegan smoothie!

And there was my breakfast. A superfood, vegan, quiona smoothie. Very filling, nutritious and delicious. If you haven’t read my recipe for this quinoa salad, you can find it here; http://feedyourprettysoul.com/2015/07/07/vegan-superfood-quinoa-2/

If you decide to make it, my advice would be save half for your breakfast the next morning 🙂

Have you ever used leftovers for a breakfast smoothie?

Make sure to buy natural peanut butter with no added sugar, and watch out as artificial ingredients to enhance ( I don’t know why because the natural stuff tastes great!). Bananas are also a great breakfast ingredient. The high potassium levels energizing and waking up your brain and they slowly release energy throughout the day.

Blueberry Breakfast Smoothie

Blueberry & Banana Breakfast Smoothie Recipe

Hi everyone, thanks for coming to take a look at my first smoothie recipe.

I started making smoothies for breakfast around 6 months ago, as although Starbucks muffins were very tasty,  they were also not keeping me full for longer than an hour and did you know they can contain up to 400 cals per muffin!? Fruit salads didn’t seem to hit the spot either so I decided to start looking for a filling breakfast which is not only tasty but nutritious.

After doing some reading online, smoothies seemed like a interesting idea, but could a smoothie really keep me full until lunch time? I decided to play around with a few ingredients and the results…..

smoothie1

AMAZING! The blueberry breakfast smoothie was delicious and definitely filled me up. Dairy free and low calories, this is an easy smoothie to make and also contains 2 of your recommended 5 a day.

Banana & Bluberry Breakfast Smoothie
Write a review
Print
Ingredients
  1. 1 cup of almond milk (non sweetened)
  2. 1 banana
  3. 1/3 cup of oats (steel cut)
  4. 3/4 cup of blueberries
  5. 1 handful of crushed ice (optional)
Foxes and Food http://foxesandfood.com/
Blend it all together and there you have it. The low fat, healthy, delicious breakfast smoothie that will keep you full until lunch time (yes it does actually exist!)

Although tiny, blueberries include a number of anti-oxidants to keep your body healthy and your immune system high. They are high in fiber too, so combined with the oats this smoothie can aid weight loss by making you feel fuller for longer… what’s not to like?

Fresh blueberries can be pricey, my suggestion is buy them frozen. Recent studies have shown that freezing fruit and vegetables has very little (if not any) effect on the nutritional value.

Next time your doing your food shop, why not think about smoothies for breakfast and let me know how you get on!
